Microinfluencers: start with audience fit, not a follower rule

Build a shortlist around relevance and evidence instead of assuming smaller creators always perform better.

What a smaller creator can offer

A smaller creator may have a focused subject, local context or a style that fits your product. Those are reasons to inspect the work, not conclusions that follow from follower count. Definitions of microinfluencer vary, so a numeric label is a poor replacement for a brief.

For a regional service, the important question may be whether viewers can actually visit. For a specialist product, it may be whether the creator can explain the use accurately. Decide which fit matters before sorting by audience size.

Research does not establish a universal small-creator advantage

Leung and colleagues' Influencer Marketing Effectiveness study examined sponsored Weibo posts and engagement, not Vouched campaigns or Philippine sales. It found that creator, follower and message characteristics affected effectiveness; larger follower size was positively associated with engagement responsiveness in that setting. That does not justify saying microinfluencers always win, or that larger creators always do.

Our inference is narrower: assess the audience, work and campaign design together, and test in your own context.

Build an evidence-led shortlist

Use discovery and audience checks as inputs, then inspect what is actually verified. A declared audience fact is not a measured one. Do not imply a creator has buyers in your market just because the topic seems relevant.

  1. Define the customer, location, language and content job.
  2. Review relevant recent work and audience evidence.
  3. Check availability, deliverables, usage and the proposed compensation.
  4. Run a bounded campaign and compare results using the same measurement definitions.

Common questions

Should I always choose several small creators over one large creator?

No. The best mix depends on the specific scope and evidence. More creators also means more coordination, and overlapping audiences should not be counted as unique reach.
